Express Scribe is an easy to use application designed to help typists easily transcript audio recordings.It can help them easily control the audio playback using foot pedals controllers or keyboard hotkeys. For example, the program can be set to play the audio file with pausing, enabling you to review your typing.

When installing the application, it offers to add third party software that can change the settings of your web browser. Besides that, the program provides you with an easy to use interface, which makes it suitable for any kind of user.

To start using it, you just have to open the desired dictation file. The application supports multiple file formats, both audio and video: MP3, WAV, MPEG, OGG, RM, AVI, FLV and so on. Furthermore, it can also open audio CD tracks, which is useful for writing down song lyrics.

Express Scribe can be set to automatically download recordings from your network, email or the Internet, which is useful if you are a professional typist that constantly receives tasks. Moreover, for each dictation file, you can set deadlines and bookmarks.

What does a transcriber do?

A transcriber listens to a person speaking on either an analogue tape (not so much these days) or a digital file.

The words spoken on the file are typed into a word processing application e.g. Word in a format that has been requested.

How to become a transcriber?

Becoming a transcriber is easier than ever.

There are a large number of companies that hire transcribers. Check out these transcription companies in the UK and these jobs in the US.

Alternatively, you could also set up your own business as a transcriber.

Setting up a business isn’t the easiest option. If you are interested in starting your own business check out this article on setting up a transcription business from home.

Do I need qualifications to become a transcriber?

You don’t need to have qualifications to become a transcriber.

Obviously any qualifications would be a benefit. You would have a better chance of getting a position over a candidate that doesn’t have any.

Each company that you apply to will have different requirements.

Generally speaking you will need to have a good typing speed, excellent spelling and reliability.

If you start your own business then you don’t need any qualifications. I have an Audio Typing RSA 1 but I haven’t added this information to my site. I have a lot of audio typing experience and I believe this accounts for more.

What equipment do I need to become a transcriber?

To become a transcriber you would need at a minimum a PC/Laptop, broadband connection, headphones (for confidentiality), transcription software such as Express Scribe, access to a site for sending large files e.g. Dropbox and to increase speed a foot pedal.

What is a transcriber machine?

A transcriber machine is basically a machine that will let you control the playback of a file.

They generally use small tapes that you insert into a dictaphone to record on.

Once recorded it is passed onto an audio typist and they use a transcriber machine to replay the tape.

Tapes are not used very often now as digital files are more popular.

What is transcription software?

Transcription software is software that you load onto a PC/Laptop that will allow you to control the playback of a digital file.

A popular transcription software is Express Scribe.

Is Express Scribe free?

Express Scribe offers a free version.

It does have limitations but is worth trying if you are just starting out.

You will not be able to transcribe certain file formats.

How to install Express Scribe?

Click on the link on the above page. Once it has downloaded click on the .exe file and follow the instructions.

Express Scribe free vs pro

In the free version of Express Scribe the following file formats are not supported:

DSS (Digital Speech Standard), Sony Recorder formats (msv, dvf), Philips, Grundig, Olympus recorder format and Video Playback (AVI, MOV, WMV and many more) are NOT supported in the free version of Express Scribe.

With the pro version you are entitled to technical help whereas with the free version you do not get any technical help.

It also states on their website that the free version won’t work with an Infinity Foot Pedal.

What files does Express Scribe play?

Why use a foot pedal for transcription?

Using a foot pedal for doing transcription will definitely increase the speed that you transcribe a file.

This will increase your productivity and then the amount of money you can make. The cheapest place I have found for foot pedals is Amazon. (aff link)

How do I install Infinity foot pedal with Express Scribe?

There are a number of places you can buy the infinity foot pedal including Amazon (aff link) which I believe is the cheapest.

Why is my Infinity foot pedal not working with Express Scribe?

There could be a number of reasons why an Infinity foot pedal isn’t working with Express Scribe.

If the foot pedal is not working when you plug it in then click on the options on the top bar.

Then click on the Control tab as below.

Ensure the tick is in the enable foot pedal controller. If not tick it and then take out the USB cable and then plug it in again.

If it still isn’t picking the foot pedal up ensure you have the Pro version and then click on Controller Setup Wizard. You should only have to set this up once.

Can I use Express Scribe without a foot pedal?

You can use Express Scribe without a foot pedal. To do this you would use the hot keys on your keyboard. Check out this article on using the hot keys and whether you should use hot keys or a foot pedal.

Can Express Scribe Play Videos?

You need to purchase the PRO version of Express Scribe to be able to transcribe videos. However, it will only play the audio and not show the video.

What Video File Formats does Express Scribe Support?

The video file formats that it can play are 3G2, 3GP, ASF, AVI, DivX, DV, FLV, M4V, MKV, MOV, MP4, MPEG and WMV.

Can Express Scribe play dss files?

Yes, the Pro version will play DSS files.

Can Express Scribe play m4a files?

Yes, the Pro version will play m4a files.

Finding transcriber jobs depends on where you are. Some transcription companies only want to hire transcribers who will in their own country. Check out these posts. You can also get jobs on job websites such as Elance and PeoplePerHour.
