To begin working through the 173 different VPN services, we started by eliminating services that are based in countries that participate in the “14 Eyes” program.
The 14 Eyes program is an agreement between multiple countries, where the government can force internet service providers to track your activity and turn over the logs.
Of the original 173 services, 123 are based in countries that participate in the 14 Eyes program and have been eliminated from our review process.
IPPredator, GoVPN and ChillGlobal are all participants in the 14 Eyes program, and have been removed from our list.
VPNs Disqualified Due to Missing Features
To keep your Mac computer safe while it’s connected to the internet, we verified that the remaining services on our list provide a minimum set of features.
Criteria #1: OpenVPN Support
Managing your connection to their network requires the VPN service to use a protocol, and most typically use OpenVPN, PPTP or IPSec.
In general, OpenVPN is considered one of the most popular and secure protocols, and services that offered it were ranked higher during our review.

Criteria #2: Unlimited Bandwidth and Data Transfer
When you use your smartphone, the data that you send and receive is referred to as “bandwidth,” and the amount of bandwidth you consume is tracked each month.

Criteria #4: Support for Multiple Operating Systems
Even though you’re connecting to the VPN service with a Mac computer, you may want to connect with other devices that use different operating systems.
VPN services that provide support for operating systems other than MacOS were ranked higher in our review, and services that do not support mainstream operating systems were eliminated.
SunVPN and IntelliVPN are two services that have been removed for their lack of support for multiple mainstream operating systems.
Criteria #5: Support Multiple Concurrent Connections
If you want to protect every device you own that connects to the internet, you’re going to need a VPN service that allows you to open multiple simultaneous connections.
VPN services that limit your connection speeds or refuse to allow you to open multiple connections at the same time were eliminated from our review.
HotVPN and IBVPN are two examples of services that have been removed for failing to support multiple connections.
Criteria #6: No Peer2Peer Blocking
There may be times that you want to connect to Peer2Peer filesharing networks to download large files or stream high-definition video content.
VPN services that block Peer2Peer filesharing networks have been eliminated from our review process, to ensure that you can stay safe while downloading online.

Criteria #7: FreeTrials, Refunds and Money-Back Guarantee

VPN services that offer a free-trial period or a valid money-back guarantee were ranked higher in our review, while services that do not were eliminated.

During speed tests, ExpressVPN displayed the fastest speeds in our review, and we did not experience any reliability or connectivity issues.

There may be times that you find ExpressVPN is unavailable for you or doesn’t function well with the hardware and software you’re using to connect to the internet.
For times like those, IPVanish may prove to be a suitable alternative, and they have secured the #2 spot during our review process.

IPVanish is one of the most competitively priced VPN services that we’ve tested, charging only $7.50 per month or $4.87 when you pay for 12 months in advance.
The software supplied by IPVanish is simple to download and install, and we didn’t experience any issues using it to connect to their network.

The software supplied by HideMyAss is easy to download and install, and we didn’t experience any issues using it to connect to their network, which is their only positive factor in our review.
CONs
HideMyAss is one of the most expensive VPN services we’ve tested, charging $16.99 per month and $9.29 per month when 12 months are paid in advance.
While testing the speed of their network, we experienced multiple dropped connections and reliability issues, which made getting an accurate result difficult.

The customer support team at HideMyAss, while helpful, took far too long to respond to our submitted requests when compared to other VPN services we’ve featured.
